Fue un virtuoso trompetista estadounidense nacido el 7 de noviembre de 1922 en Nueva Orleans, Luisiana, bajo el nombre Alois Maxwell Hirt. Apodado “Jumbo” y “The Round Mound of Sound”, se convirtió en una figura emblemática del jazz tradicional y la música pop instrumental – Su álbum Honey in the Horn y el sencillo Java (1964) fueron éxitos masivos, ganando un Grammy y vendiendo más de un millón de copias en el mismo año.
